In the context of education, generative AI tools raise deep concerns regarding reliability and responsibility. In light of their expanding use, our traditional concepts of learning and knowing must be carefully re-examined and, perhaps, transformed. Addressing these challenges appropriately shall start with posing a set of fundamental epistemological questions. What should count as knowledge in the context of generative AI? What can we say about the grounding and justification of such knowledge? What role does human-machine dialogue play in its construction and transmission? And how might these emerging epistemological frameworks reshape our cognitive ecosystems? In seeking answers to these questions, this paper investigates how recent generative developments in AI challenge some classical conceptual descriptions (Turing 1950, Minsky 1974, Dennett 1978), and how several alternative approaches (Harré 1990, Brooks 1991) may contribute to the development of more productive theoretical understandings and, potentially, more effective educational strategies. This is essential for evaluating the prospects of machine-assisted knowledge acquisition and production, as well as issues of individual accountability and performance assessment, and their overall impact on our educational practices.
